Chapter Eleven

Sarah was impressed with how quickly and efficiently Jed had freed the animal. The animal had been in pain, but she was obviously a good workhorse.

“I’ll go up to the house,” Jed said after driving the wagon up into the barnyard. He climbed down from the vehicle. “I’ll be right back.”

And then he disappeared from Sarah’s view as he went to speak with the horse’s owner, David Troyer.

He was back within minutes with a young man Sarah recognized immediately. She had seen him at Sunday church services. He had a wife and three children, although he couldn’t be more than twenty-one years old.

“Hallo, David,” she greeted.

“Sarah,” he said with a nod. “You helped my horse. Danki.”

Her eyes met Jed’s briefly. “I’m glad I could help.”

“Ellen,” David said, acknowledging the young girl.

Sarah smiled as Ellen said hallo, then the two men moved aside to talk quietly.

Soon, Jed climbed into the wagon next to Sarah. “He is going to see to his mare. I think she’ll be fine.”

“Ja,” Sarah agreed.

“Now, Ellen, Sarah, are we ready to begin our day?”

“Ja!” Ellen exclaimed, and Sarah and Jed grinned at each other.

“Let’s go, then!”

They went to the fabric store first, where Sarah bought Josie’s quilting fabric. Sarah purchased three yards of three different colors—blue, burgundy and green—as well as three yards of unbleached muslin. While she was there, she purchased material for a new cape, apron and prayer kapp for herself and her mother.

Thoughts of her mother gave her pause. How was Mam faring? Should she ask Jed to take her to Whittier’s Store so she could call home? Their neighbors, the Johnsons, would get a message to Dat...

“Sarah.” Jed’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “Are you ready for a snack?”

“A snack?” she echoed.

“Ja.” His eyes lit up boyishly, and Sarah couldn’t help but smile.

“Before lunch?” There was something so appealing about Jed as he stood there with Ellen by his side. He had a hand on the young girl’s shoulder. She glanced toward Ellen to see that her eyes were lit up, as well.

“What are ya thinking?”

“Ice cream,” they chimed in together.

“Ice cream.” She saw their faces, and suddenly the thought of ice cream before their midday meal sounded like a wonderful idea. Sarah laughed. “Ice cream sounds gut.”

Jed grinned. Ellen exclaimed with joy, and then Jed took Sarah’s fabric purchases from her and set them in the wagon before the three of them climbed in.

Jed drove them to a small ice-cream shop that had more flavors in one place than she’d ever seen. Back home in Kent County, Delaware, Sarah’s favorite place for ice cream was Byler’s General Store. Most of the time, her family kept ice cream in their gas freezer, but there was something special about going out for it. Today, she realized, that something special was Jedidiah Lapp driving her around town.

As she and Ellen sat across from Jed, Sarah enjoyed her treat and thought how fun it was to be eating it before the midday meal. They
